Hi, 

I interrupted the original bug report.  This quick note is intended to close
out the notes I inserted some time back.  

I did find a small app, dragzoom.m, that meet my needs.  It can be found in
many locations, github, matlab file exchange, etc.  There are a couple of
matlab dependencies that must be removed by some alternative approaches or
simply disabling one feature.  

It is almost (>>95%) Octave uitoolbox ready.  So I did the trial accordingly.
Other than the region zoom by mouse drag, it worked out quite well. 

Because dragzoom preserves the aspect ratio and does not have the distortion
of the camzoom, I can get to points of interest reliably and w/o repairs.  See
the ofig & jpg samples in the attached zip
