Maybe related to comment #17:

I also have several Octave versions / releases installed next to each other.
What I more or less consistently find is that when I install e.g., a dev
version (using nsis-installer), the new desktop shortcut points to the latest
stable release (7.2.0) instead of 8.0.0. I always have to fix that manually.
I noted the code searching for other Octave installations in
<mxe-octave>/tools/make_install_script.sh (-.in), I suppose there's some
not-yet-perfect stuff there, but I never bothered to investigate.

In <mxe-octave>/tools/make_install_script.sh (-.in) I have commented out most
of the commands that write to the windows registry (so my dev versions won't
interfere with stable releases). 
But the above observation was already made long before those adaptations; IIRC
already with 5.x.x.
