Follow-up Comment #25, bug #62417 (project octave):

is there a historical reason we publish the format name as 'short e' instead
of 'shorte'? (it's been that way at least back to v3, which is as far as I can
google old docs). 

'shorte' and ('short','e') are both needed for full compatability, even if the
latter appears undocumented on matlab's side. while i think modification to
accept 'short e' wouldn't be terribly complex, just removing it from the docs
would also eliminate the ambiguity.
