Details:

1. The NEWS files for versions 1,2,3,4 say NEWS.xxx but those for 5,6,7,8 say
NEWS.xxx.md. Is this intended or an oversight?

2. The file permission for NEWS.7.md has the executable bits switched on while
those for the others do not. The file is not an executable.
