Changeset http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/80457383d5e1 (default
branch) provides the possibility of rotated labels. However, the close button
is disabled in rotated tabs because the close button can only be placed left
or right within a tab, which means in the upper or lower half of the text for
rotated tabs. However, the tabs can still be closed via the file menu, the tab
bar context menu, the related shortcut, a middle mouse click or a double click
on the tab.
