Follow-up Comment #2, bug #60292 (project octave):
If it may give you some consolation:
On my laptop screen (1368x768) Matlab's output isn't much better, see attached
pic. Matlab's line segments are joined more pleasingly, but the lines
themselves are much more jagged than Octave's.
