Follow-up Comment #4, bug #59027 (project octave):

I have just realized that this preferences was already added in July 2018
(cset http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/a7ee69d23f32, bug #49119).
Thus, it should have been included in version 5.2.0 already and it does not
explain the change in the behavior that you are seeing between 5.2.0 and
6.0.90.
