@Mike: I added your BIST test here
https://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/4f00900ac621.  I modified it
slightly in that there wasn't any need to call rmdir with the recursive
option.  I also added an asterisk to the BIST test so it would show up as a
regression, rather than just a known bug, if it resurfaces in the future.
