Follow-up Comment #6:

I changed this for Matlab compatibility in this cset
(https://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/6ec7b2e73b5b) and added the code
in comment #4 as a BIST test.  This will be released in the 6.1 version of
Octave, or you can simply download the text.m m-file from Mercurial to get the
change in your current distribution.
