Details:

Octave GUI 5.1.0 is randomly adding carriage returns to the command line as I
type. It's maddening. 

Half way through entering a command, the cursor will jump down to the next
line (without the prefixed  ">>"). I cannot go back on the line(s) above and
edit them to fix any mistakes and must start over.

If I leave Octave running for a while without entering commands, the cursor
eventually goes all the way to the bottom of the page.
