Follow-up Comment #1:

Marking as confirmed.  Matlab has been slowly shifting the API under us.  It
didn't use to be the case that an axes handle was valid input for the first
argument.  However, more and more of their plot functions now accept a figure
or axes handle as the first argument.

I'm lowering the priority since there is an easy workaround as you suggest.
