Follow-up Comment #10:

I attached a patch that allows the use of "-svgconvert" together with the EPS
format. This will allow non-ascii characters to be used but not transparency:
any transparent object will cause the EPS file to contain a rasterized image
of the figure. Any objection to pushing this on default?

This would eliminate the latest format for which non-ascii characters are
forbidden (the others have been deprecated).
