I've just had a look through the manual page of Nano 4.2 because I had
forgotten which option switches on soft-wrapping of long lines.
(As an aside: if I would have forgotten a short option, I would either
use an abbreviation of the long option (in this case: --soft), or I
would run 'nano --help | grep word', where "word" in this case would
be "soft".)
Well, it's `-$', which is really not a good choice. The manual page
even
explains why. It also breaks POSIX-compatibility.
So, I went to look for an alternative and found that, apparently, `-$'
could just be replaced by `-S' because `-S' is an “obsolete and
ignored
option” now that “smooth scrolling has become the default”.
I therefore suggest to drop `-$' and instead use `-S' for activating
soft-wrapping.
Well, dropping -$ doesn't sound like a good idea, but making -S the
true
short option for --softwrap, yes, that is the plan. But it is a bit
soon
to make that change. -S and --smooth are being ignored only since
three
months. Let's let a year pass and then make -S mean --softwrap.
