ChangeLog: 

 * threads.hh, unix/threads.cc: added an initial skeleton for
   ansynchronous tasks, running in separate threads.
 * Makefile.am: primitive addition of pthreads, still unconditional and
   only working on unix (probably just Linux).
 * file_io.cc, file_io.hh: try using that async framework for
   ident_existing_file().
 * base.hh: removed the no-threading boost macros.
 * automate.cc, work.cc: adapted to new ident_existing_file().
