non-standard pid file

I have a couple of daemons that do create a pid file at startup but the pid file contains the text "pid: " before the pid. How can I set up a config file that will be able to ignore the "pid: " part of that file and just read the pid that's in there?

Right now I'm checking using the process matching method, but I'd like to know if matching for the pid is still possible.
