Thanks for the suggestion! No I hadn't tried that, but it seems I can
run it as many times as I want with no effect:
$ monit quit
monit daemon with pid [4536] killed
$ monit quit
monit daemon with pid [4536] killed
$ monit quit
monit daemon with pid [4536] killed
The monit daemon is still stuck.
