We use monitrc only and the name is hardcoded, but it is possible to specify the control file using the -c switch to the monit program. I suspect that the rpm has a wrapper script using -c to specify /etc/ monit.conf as the control file.

I have a 4.9 version of monit running that uses /etc/monitrc for configuration settings. I download an rpm for a 4.9 version and it uses /etc/monit.conf Can someone let me know why the difference? What controls the name of the config file. I would like to change it so both versions match.
