Does monit always run as a daemon?

Hello,

I see that by the "monit -help" command indicates 
-d n          Run as a daemon once per n seconds
and the default config file also has
set daemon 120

Is Monit designed to run as a daemon always?  I had gotten it running a
while back (ie logging files, sending e-mails, etc), and sucessfully
restarting my Apache whenever it died.  For some time, Monit has stopped
logging files and sending out e-mails and because Apache has been steady I
thought it's because there's nothing for Monit to do.

However, last night Apache died and Monit didn't restart the service.  I
SSHed in, did the following:
address@hidden log]# monit
monit daemon at 32582 awakened
But in the log file it says
[EDT May 13 05:09:13] info     : monit daemon at 5810 awakened
[EDT May 13 05:09:28] error    : 'apache' process is not running
[EDT May 13 05:09:28] info     : 'apache' trying to restart
[EDT May 13 05:09:28] info     : 'apache' start: /etc/init.d/httpd
[EDT May 13 05:09:28] error    : 'apache' failed to start
[EDT May 13 05:10:19] error    : monit: error connecting to the monit daemon

Any ideas of what I did wrong?
