The problem is that the application is put in the background with the
last '&' in the first line. So the pid you save is the pid of the
shell, that is, not the pid of the program. You should write this as:
echo $$ > /tmp/sylpheed.pid
exec 2>&1 $CM 1>$LOG_FILE
