Confirmation that a process is running

Hello All,

 

How does MONIT detect/conclude that a process is running??

In other words what is the condition that MONIT checks to confirm if a     process registered with it is still running?

 

Also , can MONIT detect if a process is "hung"??

If yes , then what action does it take??
