I'm all for automake, provided that the following are true:

 No checked in files get modified during any part of the build/configure.
 We don't suddenlyhave lots of files that have to get their timestamps
 checked on a clean build during the automake/configure process.
Both of these things have sprung up in me in the past, and they're a real
pain when you have your code checked into something like perforce and you
do automated builds.
