I'm not able to reproduce this error, using the same Debian package
running under Debian sid.

Can you run the following command and send me the output?

    /usr/bin/mit-scheme --compiler --heap 4000 --option-summary

For example, here is what happens when I do this on my computer:

> ravna:1$ /usr/bin/mit-scheme --compiler --heap 4000 --option-summary
