The failure is different, but I think that's because the TAB character
at the beginning of the command was somehow converted to spaces,
perhaps by your mailer.  However, the vpath problem is clearly visible
nonetheless: the patched version says ``no vpath search paths'', while
the unpatched version does recognize the vpath setting.  So I think we
can be sure now that vpath is the problem.
