Not as workaround, but maybe this could be implemented in lynx
itself to mimic mutt's digest handling.

Well, I use as _filter_ any program that I want, too.
Only I'd like that the output is captured by lynx rather than an
external 3rd party pager (less) or the handler application itself
(gv instead of pdf2txt or pdf2html +lynx).

Because of your still true sig!
I've actually gone to lengths to put some sun-glasses on firefox to
be as easy on the eyes as lynx is (to use where lynx still fails:
tables ;).
Lynx is still my primary browser, using GUI ones only when
absolutely no other way.
Switching to source and jumping to <img src=... and <script src=...
tags serves me well as workaround. I'm still waiting for a
convenient solution in GUI-firefox to load single images on demand
rather than "all or none", like it used to work with v1.0.1 (or
before).
