I'm not an expert - I based my choice on the manpages on Linux (and compared
with Solaris, Digital Unix):
lrand48 NOTES
These functions are declared obsolete by SVID 3, which
states that rand(3) should be used instead.
random CONFORMING TO
BSD 4.3
rand CONFORMING TO
SVID 3, BSD 4.3, ISO 9899
