I was having problems compiling bzip2-0.9.0c on FreeBSD and I contacted
Julian Seward. He suggested me to use

gcc -O -o bzip2 bzip2.c blocksort.c huffman.c crctable.c randtable.c compress.c 
decompress.c bzlib.c

and it worked.
