Um, ESC would be difficult to get right. ANS X3.64 uses it a lot,
y'know. Somebody went to a *lot* of trouble to make emacs work right on
X3.64-compliant terminals (VT1xx/2xx/3xx/4xx/5xx and hundreds of clones).
I'm not saying, "don't use ESC"; I'm recommending that anyone considering
ESC look very carefully at all the things it's already used for and judge
thoughtfully just how much work it will take to do a correct implementation.
