They could reconfigure it to just send the internal user number, but that
would put them in an awkward position with respect to forged email and
other network abuses, as currently everyone potentially knows the
information is transmitted, but if they sent the user number, they
would be forced to make legally sensitive judgements about whether it
was reasonable to release the information.

The full address will also redirect some abuse complaints to the
perpetrator, rather than Netcom support.

Having the true sender avalable to anyone using suitable mail software
tends to deter forged mail, and, in particular, sending of junk mail.
