LYNX-DEV LYNX iso-8859-1 DGUX

I compiled lynx2-6 on DGUX and the special iso-8859-1 characters are
 shown 'M-D' not 'Ä'.
In the 'lynx -trace'-mode 'Ä' is converted to 'Ä'.

     Output from lynx -trace(DGUX):
     anchor text:   'ÄÖÜ Ä' pos:  5  (Output src/GridText.c)

Why is the normal character-output the Meta-representation?
  The GridText output shows 8-bit-output on the same sreen!
