You're right. The non-deterministic part is that at the next power on 
the old address might be not available anymore or, as in Alex's case, 
generate conflicts for some reason. In fact the RFC (section 2.1) states 
that hosts should use the previously recorded address "as their *first 
candidate* when probing".

I know it's exactly what you had in mind, I just wanted to clarify for 
unexperienced users who might be tuned on this discussion.
