That's what I thought was most likely, but structuring it that way is a
bit odd and I wanted to check it wasn't being clever in some way I
hadn't worked out.

Can anyone see a functional reason for the integer constants using "!",
or shall I just remove them all (and perhaps replace with comments) as
Bill suggests?
