Works fine for me now, using release candidate six:
  ftp://ftp.wxwidgets.org/pub/2.9.0-RC6/wxWidgets-2.9.0-RC6.tar.bz2
BTW, I see no new compiler diagnostics with RC6 and MinGW gcc-3.4.5 .
