Let me be a little more clear, please. I completely 
understand why there's two layers of messaging when I use 
'variable_annuity.xsl'; that's not the problem I'd like
fixed, which I feared is what you all might be thinking.
I'm really looking for a fix that allows pdf output for
products that use 'variable_annuity.xsl'. 

Also, I think this defect confirms Greg's affirmation his
earlier mailing list discussion:
  nothing happens [no console window appears] when it just works
    i.e., the other xsl files
  the system displays appropriate message boxes with helpful
   debugging information when there's a problem
