    Remove backslashes from the last line of automake variables
    
    This is explicitly not supported by automake and these backslashes,
    added as a side effect in 548812c41b4e22a89f1cd107905081167a4e04b3,
    result in "error: blank line following trailing backslash" when running
    automake.
