Letter from
the President

Recreating Nature

This week I’m having the pleasure of celebrating two birthdays - Canada Day, which is to commemorate the confederation of Upper and Lower Canada and some of the Maritime Provinces into the Dominion of Canada in 1867, and of course, our Independence Day. I hope all of you in the States will have a safe and fun time celebrating the independent spirit we Americans are so proud of!

Speaking of celebrating, imagine how patients with facial abnormalities must feel when they’re able to get back into the public thanks to facial prosthetics that look like the real thing. Read this week’s story from the Medical University of South Carolina to learn more about hand-painted, computerized body parts and how they’re giving patients newfound confidence. An innovative technique has patients with gum defects smiling more confidently, according to Dr. Thanos Kristallis who says he’s trying to “recreate nature” with lifelike ceramic gums. Also feeling quite confident are the growing numbers of women who are having high-risk pregnancies. Check out our story from Florida Hospital about the 23-year old quadriplegic who had a baby after she was paralyzed from the neck down.

In this week’s In-Depth Doctor’s Interview John Regan, M.D., from Beverly Hills explains how a minimally invasive surgical procedure using a tiny balloon is offering relief to back pain patients. I thought it interesting that 80 of these procedures have been done in Europe, 40 in the Far East, and just six cases performed in the United States. And according to our story from Phoenix, there’s a painless technology for spotting skin cancer which has been used for years in Australia (often considered the skin cancer capital of the world), with only a handful of doctors currently using it in the States.

In case you missed them, you may want to check our past reports, Premium Content in ArchivesPregnancy and Weight Loss -- In-Depth Expert's Interview or Premium Content in ArchivesCuring Fear of the Dentist. Premium Content in the Archives may be purchased for as little as $9 for 24-hour, unlimited access. If you would like to access Premium Content for the first time click here.

Finally, don’t be surprised if your dentist diagnoses a medical problem before you’re even aware of it. It seems that inflamed gums, excess cavities and oral infections can be a sign of heart disease, and an ammonia smell in the mouth is a sign of kidney disease. Read our report to find out the ten things your dentist can diagnose.

And there's more where that came from...

"In everyone's life, at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit."
