Hey Sagar,
that begs the question Why Not SMS, is it that hard? there

As I understand it, VoIP is a separate 'thing' from telephony. Both, SMS as well as calling telephone numbers are telephony 'things' and so to be able cross over from VoIP into telephony and vice versa, you need a VoIP service provider who sets up the 'bridge' between VoIP and telephony.

IF your VoIP provider has such a 'bridge' THEN you can make/receive calls to/from regular phone numbers with linphone, because there is a standardized way to do this. For SMS on the other hand (and I'm really making a wild guess here) I don't know if there is a standardized way to bridge the VoIP and telephony worlds. Therefore, linphone (probably?) does not support it.

For example, my VoIP provider, localphone.com, allows me to call phones from VoIP clients like linphone, but if I have send an SMS, that has to be done via their website.

Hope this helps,
Sagar

Note that this 'text messaging' is not the same as SMS. In
particular, I *THINK* that if the contact is not on-line, the message
will not be delivered.

Regards,
Sagar
