The only error encountered was in the linphone-3.7.0 section.  It was:
        configure: error: libupnp >= 1.6 < 1.5 required;
        In synaptic, find libupnp6-dev; install it; remove libupnp4-dev;
And that fixed it.  Uboo (Ubuntu 13.10) is now happy.

Glad it helped.. and on checking my installation, I see that my wheezy install has libupnp6-dev, not libupnp4-dev.. so apparently the package name in my post was wrong. I have now updated the post.
