Thank you very much I will check out pbxes, sounds very promising.

Since posting my question but before checking your response I actually have found some success now with a jailbreak app  "GV Mobile" for the call back. I have to keep linphone open in the background, use GV Mobile to dial, then go to linphone and accept the incoming call. The only annoying thing with incoming calls (and callback calls) is that Linphone does not ring at all. Is this a bug with Linphone on the 2g iphone or is there some setting / trick I'm missing? It would be nice to leave Linphone open in the background and get a ring for incoming calls. A SIP softphone app called siphon rings but never actually connects the callback call, or at least I can't hear anything. If you have any scoop on a really solid softphone app for iphone 2g or callback app I would love to hear about it. Linphone would be fine if I could get it to ring.

BTW I live not too far S of Albany in the mid hudson valley.

Not going to go into setting it up for incoming calls b/c you have that working but for outgoing calls, you can either get an app that does a callback for you or you can use pbxes.org who have set there accounts/network which is free to be integrated with google voice, so when you dial a number or sip address in your linphone sip client, it will directly go through google network and make the call for you like you were in gmail and made the call using the gmail phone calling option.  I use pbxes.org with sipdroid client on my phone and it works perfectly.

In terms of callback option, on my mytouch 3g on tmobile network, we have an app for free called google voice callback, that solves the outgoing calls problem, but ever since pbxes.org intergrated for there users who have a google voice account with google voice so they could make outgoing calls, i have been just using pbxes.org as my sip address on my phone to make and receive calls.  Hope this helps.

I am a complete novice at this. Am I missing something basic that
would prevent this set-up from working in theory?

I managed to validate the IPKall # w/google voice and like I mentioned
I can call into my google voice # and it goes through to the softphone
on the iphone. When I try to call out it immediately fails even though
before I place the call either softphone indicates that it is
"connected to sip.linphone.org" (Siphon) or "Registration on sip:
sip.linphone.org Successful" (Linphone). This message does not come
back after first failed call placement attempt. A message comes up "
call failed...... reason: not found" (Linphone). Error logs from
Linphone console???
