I have exactly the same on my debian unstable.

I've found the reason of your problem:
you've got a space in your directory path (/home/mcquaid/linphone 1.5).
This confuses a script run within the Makefile.
Simply rebuild linphone from directory path without space 
(/home/mcquaid/linphone_1.5) and that should work.
