I fear that you are not running the good linphone version...
It is very easy to make something wrong with shared libraries.
If you compile from sources, you must install linphone and take care that you 
do not have different linphone's shared lib (like liblinphone.so) in 
different places for example /usr/lib and /usr/local/lib
Normally the bug you had was fixed in 1.0.0pre5.

When I compile from source on my machine I always do
./configure --prefix=/usr --disable-static && make && make install
and then run /usr/bin/linphone
