Hi,

You are not the first wanting, and  considering coding for video-conference.
However, the question is however if a client is the proper place to start. I 
think not.....

I agree that linphone, like many sip (or xmpp) clients have all required parts 
for doing so, however bandwidth implication learn otherwise.
If it is a client-feature, it means that every participant must send its stream 
to any other participant, and be prepared to receive likewise number of 
incoming streams.
For three conference partners on a LAN, that might be acceptable, but think 
about 15 or more AV-streams.....

I think that the only workable option is to have a standalone conference-room 
application, that receives all incoming streams, 
transcode it to common standard, multiplex it  and broadcast it to all 
participants.
>From others I heard that it is extremely CPU-intensive.
The people from asterisk indicate that even transcoding of the video signal 
between two parties is not do-able (load) in the way they are now doing for 
audio.
