Hi Davide,

"Paying the royalty when the final app is deployed" works in cases like AMR-NB because a free software implementation exist from opencoreamr. So the point is only to paid royalties  for patents. Note that Linphone provides plugins for these kind of patented codecs with free software implementation.
In case of G729, in addition of the patent issue which can be "easily cleared" from sipro for $15,000,  there is still the question of software implementation from the ITU spec which is not free at all. In the REAME I found from the ITU reference implementation, there is no mention of any possible commercial use of this source code. So I don't see how it is possible to legally use the G729 reference implementation even if you pay for the patent.

Developers are able to test the feature (as permitted by other apps) and paying the royalty when the final app is deployed for example…or do you think that the programmers of Siphon and Csipsimple are not so smart?

Hmm, what is the benefit of writing a plugin that nobody can legally  use ?

Yes, I know that. But since the G.729 plugin is already included in other GPL projects (e.g. CSipSimple based on PjSIP too for Android with a license disclaimer alert), why not include it also in Linphone?

Good question,

As far as I know, G729 source code used by Siphon is a port of the ITU reference implementation. From my understanding, this reference implementation is not free. Hereunder a citation from the REAME file I found from the ITU reference implementation:
"The copy of the source C code, version 1.1, is given under Copyright of the
authors, only for the purpose of establishing the specification of a codec.

All rights are reserved. Any other use of the material is prohibited."

Hi all,

I know that this topic was discussed last year, but I’d like to know if there are some news about the integration in mediastreamer2 of the G.729 plugin…nowadays it’s widely used.
Siphon, another SIP GPL project for iPhone based on PjSIP, publishes  all the G.729 source code and that could be the base to write a suitable plugin.
