This subject has been discussed already but I think it should be treated as a
bug rather than an inconvenience.

Some users habitually close the window as a way of quitting an app. Others may
look for a "Quit" in the menus and when none is found they will also close the
window. This leaves a process lt-linphone running in the background. There is
a minor problem when you once again start linphone in that there is an open
socket for linphone already in /tmp. The error message seems to be harmless as
linphone starts.

I encountered a more serious side effect. When I tried to run Camstream, a
webcam app, startup seemed to fail silently. In fact a process for camstream
had started and was chewing up cpu cycles. When linphone is shutdown properly
this scenario is avoided. Many people do not have the experience to find and
kill the unwanted processes and will resort to a restart in the hope that
things will work properly after.
