Hi Conrad,

I have seen a similar problem on a kubuntu computer: the sound didn't work at 
all sometimes. Once the problem appeared, rebooting the pc a couple of times 
was the only solution.
In this case I could that the problem was actually with the alsa driver 
totally hung, and enable to record any sound.
Send me a log  with --verbose so that I'll confirm .
