Linphone/linphonec prompts for the password when it is needed. If the 
registration is sucessful, it prints "Registration sucessful."

Use ethereal network sniffer to see the packets received emmitted by ser. If 
it could not register it surely could not call through the proxy.

Maybe a problem with your soundcard driver. It is higly recommended to use an 
alsa driver.
