\pattern should work well, but to me it feels a bit strange to induce some
unnescessary markup just for stacking some stencils ...



As you prefer. It's a pretty common thing, but
has the disadvantage at the moment that if a
property of the grob is computed by a callback,
it's an open bet whether the markup receives
the computed property (the right thing) or the
callback (the wrong thing because it doesn't have
the grob to apply the callback to). So it can cause
grobs not responding to callbacks in a few cases,
but this should not be a concern here.
