shifting lyrics from above to below staff (and back)

on the subject of shifting objects as discussed here:

has there been any progress on this issue?
I'd love to have this opportunity in a 400+ bar piece with - at times
temporarily - two voices in a staff.

Of course there is always the use of a separate lyrics context with /repeat
unfold x "\skip 1"/ applied,
but a (hopefully simple) function would be appreciated, maybe using
edition-engraver ?
