Thanks - that works well. I've found this too:
\newSpacingSection
\override Score.SpacingSpanner.spacing-increment = #4
The documentation for this says:
"This is useful when there are sections with a different notions of long
and short notes".
I wonder what the pros and cons of these are... I guess I'll have to
play around with them.
