Well, [] is documented, but the meaning is different:
http://lilypond.org/doc/v2.18/Documentation/notation/beams.html#manual-beams
 (search for 'sometimes')

It is not identical to \noBeam in a normal music context:

\version "2.19.21"
{ 8[] 8[ 8] 8[]  8[] 8[ 8 8] }
{ 8\noBeam 8[ 8] 8\noBeam  8\noBeam 8[ 8 8] }
