Hmmm... AFAIK there is no way to use properties like you can do with
"define-markup-command".
Maybe someone with a deeper knowledge than me can chime in here? :)
At least, I found a way to call the function without using the carat:

sd = #(define-event-function (parser location sdnum)
(markup?)
"Put a number with a carat above the note."
#{
^\markup {
\override #'(baseline-skip . 0.5)
\column { \small {^ #sdnum }}
}
#})
